Very cool story! It makes me want to start a tradition of my own, like the stone or the little gnome guy from Amelie (stolen by the TV commercials?). The closest thing I have now to a travel photo tradition is graffiti -- I love taking pictures of it everywhere I go, from my current town to Lucca, Italy.

Anyhoo, cool blog!

jen

lisa
i was directed to your fabulous writing by erin this last weekend, when we celebrated a few laughs and reveled over your incredible photo-documentation ( i was personally touched by the photograph of the ups delivery man with your box of personalized sharpies). however, this is just the tip of the iceberg that is my appreciation for you, which first started in the summer of 2003. i had just graduated from college and was anxious to experience life in all its subtle mystery when i was extended an invitation to attend a party whose theme was of your doing. that party, which featured me as a guy in a tent*, was my first sip from the ample bossom of post-collegiate life.
i have always thanked you in silence for my initiation into the coterie (karass? - surely not a granfalloon ) of intense individuals.
so then, this must serve as my formal appreciation and first introduction.

that being said, one fellow who has enabled us armchair-adventurers in so many ways is that hero, time berners lee, creator of the world wide web!!!

*the tent costume was based on a rap lyric of my friend eric's creation:
"i'm intense like campers - drop'n shit like torn pampers" (off of our janitors against entropy ep)
the lyric was actually created around this time.

This stone story reminds me of one thing which happened to me. I was in a train with colleagues and heading back home. In the restaurant car there was a girl with whom I was talking and suddenly an annoucement from the radio came and it was like "the girl who lost her phone, it is found, come and pick it up". She said to us that it's hers and she'll go there soon. She told somethink like that she doesn't keep in the bag/purse she's carrying all the time and that's why it gets lost every now and then. My colleague then just said "so what are you carrying in your bag then? Stones?" not really as a question but as a joke. She grabbed the bag, put her hand inside and showed us a little stone. We began to laugh because the situation was SO absurd. She said that she's been carrying that for many years already. Of course we asked "why?" but she didn't have an explanation. That's just something she does. She carries a stone wherever she goes. Bizarre.
